Education
Education is about finding out who we are, where we belong, and what the purpose of our lives is. It is not just about acquiring knowledge and skills. The root of education is educare, which means to draw out. We need to draw out from every person in every country, the gifts and potential they possess. As Citizens, as educators, and as human beings, our calling is to help others to attain their full humanity, not to beat them down but to share with them the prize.
75 million children remain out of school completely. Twice as many, many of them girls, go for a short while but then drop out. We think we are making progress but the facts are that too many children around the world are receiving inadequate education and in many cases, no education at all.
In other countries parents sometimes use items such as live stock and other items to trade with teachers for their childrens education. Families are making a choice between educations or feeding their family, and sometimes neither.
Improving literacy is seen as an important way to raise their intellectual level and give them a dynamic and creative mind. As well as growing pools of skilled workers, in order to raise the cultural, scientific and technical levels of the working population. It will also increase knowledge about epidemics and contagious diseases.
Children so often suffer unjustly, just because they are children, for the world too often sees them as less worthy to have a voice. However all children have the right to be heard, and they have so much to say and contribute to the world. With age and power we so often forget the wisdom of a child.
As citizens of the world, we need to build a society where each individual can flourish and become the whole person they were created to be. Education is part of that transformative process for us to become fully human.
